Things to Avoid for Better Sleep

By: Sleep Maven

If you want to get a good night sleep, there are some things that should be avoided. Sleep is important for our mental and physical health and well being. However, the sad facts are that most people don’t get the right amount of sleep each night. Stress, busy schedules and sleep disorders all affect a person’s ability to sleep well at night. Some people have trouble falling asleep and others find they wake up often throughout the night. Whatever your problem with sleep, the first thing you should do is eliminate any of the common causes of poor sleep.

Here are some things to avoid for better sleep:

  • Too warm of a room- cooler is better and you can use blankets if you need to
  • Caffeine and other stimulants- if you do consume caffeine, try not to do so within 4 hours of wanting to go to bed.
  • Nicotine- This is another stimulant that will keep you up at night and make you nervous when you’re trying to relax.
  • Looking at the clock- nothing is worse than lying in bed when you can’t sleep and looking at the clock. Avoid it, even if this means turning your clock around. It causes anxiety and will make it harder to sleep.
  • Using the bed for other things. When you work, watch TV or more in your bed, it can affect your ability to sleep when nighttime comes. Reserve the bed only for sleeping.
  • Drinking too much. When you drink alcohol to help you sleep, you can actually be making it more difficult to sleep. Alcohol can cause you to wake up often throughout the night as well, resulting in restless sleep.
  • Bright lights before bedtime. Try to get your body ready for bedtime by dimming the lights around the house and setting the mood for sleep.
  • Distracting noises- you can try a white noise generator to drown out other noises that could be keeping you awake.
  • Stressing over your lack of sleep- the more you worry and focus on the fact that you need to get to sleep, the more difficult it will be for you to sleep well. Try to relax and think peaceful thoughts instead of focusing on your need to sleep.

When you avoid these things that can interrupt your sleep, you are setting yourself up for the best possible opportunity to get the sleep that you need for optimum health. Once you understand how important sleep really is you will see why you should avoid these things and get the sleep that you need each night.
